U.S. Stock Screening: Find the Best U.S. Dividend Stocks for Your Portfolio

A high dividend yield doesn't automatically mean a great stock. The Payout Ratio shows what percentage of net income is distributed as dividends. If a company earns $100 and pays $85 in dividends, the payout ratio is 85%.

A payout ratio above 80% is a warning sign. A payout ratio between 40–60% is healthier — the company can sustain dividends while still reinvesting in growth.

• < 60% — Quality zone: dividend is well-covered
• 60–80% — Caution zone: watch closely for earnings trends
• > 80% — Danger zone: high risk of dividend cut

Free Cash Flow (FCF) is the real cash a company generates from operations after subtracting capital expenditures (CAPEX). FCF represents the actual cash available to pay dividends, unlike net income which can be manipulated by accounting methods.

If dividends exceed FCF, the company is taking on debt or selling assets to pay shareholders — unsustainable long-term. A company whose FCF comfortably exceeds total dividends is far more likely to maintain or increase dividends during recessions.

• FCF Coverage > 1.5x — Safe: dividends are well-funded
• FCF Coverage 1.0–1.5x — Adequate: limited buffer
• FCF Coverage < 1.0x — Danger: company can't fund dividends from cash flow
